Indeed, private health insurance could be affected by the revelation that people who opt to sleep off their tension-related headaches may be putting themselves at greater risk of suffering from insomnia.
New findings, released in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, show that while sleep proved to be effective to tackle the pain caused by tension headaches, it can also lead to increased suffering of insomnia.
Research into the issue was carried out by a team at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Lead author on the report and principal investigator Dr Jason Ong said: “While napping may relieve pain, it may also decrease the brain’s need for sleep at night, leading to reduced ability to initiate and maintain sleep at night.”
The researchers studied a group of 65 women – all were taking part in undergraduate psychology courses at a university in the south-eastern US.
An earlier study conducted at the university found that if shift workers stick to a rigorous sleep schedule they can help to improve their own alertness and performance during night shifts.
