1) Are you perceptive and detail oriented?
A wedding is made up of many large and small details. You need to be able to determine what details are needed and put them all together to make a fabulous event.
2) Are you organized and good at organizing and managing people and things?
One of your main duties as a wedding planner is to organize all the people and details concerning the wedding. You must know due dates, responsibilities of all of the wedding vendors, design details, and much more. And you need to be able to manage and coordinate all of them at the same time.
3) Do you have good interpersonal skills?
You should be good at both oral and written communications. You should be a good listener and you must be able to understand what clients want even if they are not good communicators.
4) Are you creative and able to translate visions into reality?
You will be responsible for turning a couple’s vision of their dream wedding into a reality and you should be able to enhance the vision to make the wedding really special.
5) Can you manage a budget?
You will be called upon to create and manage wedding budgets. Your clients may expect you to keep them on track so they don’t overspend.
6) Are you good at negotiating?
You will be helping your clients select venues, caterers, florists, and other wedding vendors. They will be relying on you to help them get the best deals.
7) Can you remain calm under pressure and “think on your feet” no matter how everyone else is reacting?
Emotions run high on the days leading up to the wedding and on the wedding day itself. You must be able to remain calm and think and react quickly in any situation.
Do you keep your commitments?
You are only as good as your word. Your clients and fellow wedding vendors will expect you to keep any commitments you make. In fact, most of your commitments will be written into contracts so you will be legally bound to follow through.
9) Are you willing to work evenings, weekends and long hours?
Most weddings take place on weekends. Also, because many couples work, you will be scheduling meetings and consultations in the evenings. To get everything done right, there will be many times when you will need to work long hours. You must be flexible and willing to work hard.
10) Are you willing to keep learning and studying, not only how to plan weddings, but also how to market and run a successful business?
There are constantly new wedding ideas and trends that you will need to learn. Also, it will be important for you to keep up with trends in marketing in order to keep a steady flow of clients. This includes marketing offline, such as attending face-to-face networking events and bridal fairs, and online, such as writing blogs and connecting on social media sites like Twitter and FaceBook.
