When a bowler is out of the zone, his or hand just does not feel comfortable in the ball. Your hand may be tense. It may be sweating. It may feel weak. The ball can seem to heavy or too light.

At the same time, your legs your eyes and your hands just can’t seem to work well together. Your balance is poor and your timing is just not there. Consequently, you can’t find your line or hit your mark. The ball does not come off your hand at the right pace right speed or the right angle. You are at risk for choking in key frames and it is unlikely that you will score well when you and your hand are feeling this way.

Conversely, when your hand feels comfortable in your ball, you are more likely to enter the zone, throw strikes, make spares, score well and enjoy your night at the lanes.

Over the years, I have counseled many bowlers and I used to bowl competitively myself. I know what it is like to bowl out of the zone and to bowl in the zone.

It is essential that your hand feel very comfortable and relaxed in your ball. If your fingers and hand do not feel right, you need to step off the lane, put the ball down and get your mind, your legs, your eyes and your hand in sync with one another.

I teach bowlers a variety of mental techniques for getting comfortable, calm, focused and optimistic on the lanes. These methods can include meditation, self-hypnosis, visualization as well as some physical exercises to relieve tension, stress and discomfort in their hands as well as the rest of their bodies.

Different bowlers discover that they can get comfortable in different ways. I have developed dozens of techniques to help bowlers and other athletes to get ready to perform their best when the pressure is on. Sometimes, we have to change their pre-shot routine significantly to get them more comfortable.
